Specific Physical Training
Specific Physical Training or SPT was developed by U.S. National Archery Coach, Kisik Lee to increase his athletes Endurance, Power/Strength and Flexibility by exercising specific muscle groups. This is accomplished without the need of excercise equipment by using only archery equipment. To gain the maximum benifits from SPT it needs to be done on a daily basis. Archery Fitness
General fitness is important to any athletic undertaking, and archery would be no exception. While the benifits of a good cardio training program cannot be overstated, the focus in archery training tends to be on strength and flexibility training. In my experience I have observed a general lack of adequate warm-up and stretching on the part of archers. Just as important, and often times completely overlooked, is a proper cool-down and stretching session at the conclusion of training. Adequate excercising will not only increase flexibility but will also greatly reduce the possibility of injury to tendons, muscles and joints. Graeme Jeffery of the Centenary Archers Club Inc. in Australia has done an excellent job in addressing the topic and has included sections on Flexibility, Strength and Diet. My only suggestion, based on information from the Physical Therapists is that stretchs should be held for 20 seconds to gain maximum benifit. To view the article please click on Archery Fitness.
We are currently working on material to address aerobic training and core strength training. We are hoping to have this added to the website shortly.
SPT always forms part of a larger training plan which often includes aerobic training and core strength training.
